Detroit, Michigan

Detroit is the largest city in the state of Michigan and a major port city on the Detroit River which connects the Great Lakes. The only major city in the United States looking south to Canada is also known as The Motor City and Motown. It was Detroit where Henry Ford started his Model T, the world's first mass produced car. Today, the city is home to headquarters of the Big Three American auto makers - Ford, Chrysler and General Motors as well as the site of the North American International Auto Show. However, the city is also famous for it casino resorts, splendid examples of pre-depression skyscrapers and beautiful architecture, many exciting historic buildings and sites as well as numerous world-class museums and art galleries.

The Henry Ford, a National Historic Landmark and the nation's largest indoor-outdoor museum is definitely the most recognizable and visited attraction in Detroit. The 12 acre museum was founded by Henry Ford himself and besides exciting collection of automobiles, aircraft and locomotives also features some rare exhibits such as Abraham Lincoln's chair from Ford's Theater, John F. Kennedy presidential limousine and Rosa Parks bus as well as almost one hundred historic buildings including Thomas Edison's laboratory, Henry Ford's birthplace, the Wright brother's bicycle shop and many other prominent buildings in the Greenfield Village. Visitors of The Henry Ford are also taken to the Ford River Rouge Complex, a National Historic Landmark and a Ford Motor Company factory in Dearborn that was built in 1928. The museum also includes an IMAX Theater with exciting historical and scientific documentaries. The Henry Ford is an absolute must-see and will not delight automotive and history buffs alone.

Downtown Detroit is dominated by the spectacular Renaissance Center, a group of seven interconnected skyscrapers. The central tower known as the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center is the tallest building in Michigan, the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere and houses the largest rooftop restaurant, called Coach Insignia which besides fine dinning also offers a breathtaking view of Detroit. Adjacent to the Renaissance Center is the Detroit International Riverfront running from the Ambassador Bridge to Belle Isle Park, an island park and a Historic District connected to the city by the MacArthur Bridge. It is an attraction itself but the island is also home to several prominent Detroit's attractions including the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, Dossin Great Lakes Museum, James Scott Memorial Fountain, Belle Isle Nature Zoo, a Spanish-style casino built in 1907 and a number of historic markers and statues. The island park also offers numerous exciting activities from hiking, jogging, bicycling, swimming in summer and ice skating in the winter, fishing and much more including a beautiful view of the Renaissance Center and Downtown Detroit.

The city of Detroit is also home to numerous museums which will delight visitors who are eager to learn more about history or/and admire fine art works. Many of the city's top museums are found in the Cultural Center Historic District in Midtown Detroit or nearby including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and many others.
